Confidence

Ever wondered why Barnsley knocked Chelsea out of the FA Cup in 2008?

Clue: Its the same reason why (insert initials here) lose ad clients to the young upstarts.

Its not money. Sure, the big agencies can afford to hire better employees. But a bigger salary doesn't make you better at your job. Its just a motivator.

Its not teamwork either. Sure it plays a part, but its not the be all and end all.

I'm not even sure that its talent, obviously it plays a part in the long term, but not so much in the short term.

In my opinion, the biggest factor to play a difference is confidence. You know how it goes. You've seen it in James Bond movies, football matches and the local pub. You want to beat the bad guy/win the match/get the girl? Then get confident.

In the FA Cup, Chelsea were expected to win, because they had everything that Barnsley didn't. But that doesn't inspire confidence. Barnsley were confident because they had nothing to lose. Their fans would support them no matter what.

Guess what?

Junior creatives have nothing to lose. They don't have money, they've just started working together and they don't know how good they are. So who gets the placement?

My guess is that its the one's with enough confidence to go balls out and win.

The final push

Final week of working on our book, it's gonna be a busy one. Here's to spending the rest of my money on sharpies and pads!

The World Cup

The World Cups almost here after another four longs year of waiting. I'm thoroughly looking forward to it, not just watching England (and getting stressed) but the whole event, it seems to cheer everyone up.

The favourites are probably Brazil and Spain with Germany, Italy, Argentina and Holland closely behind (maybe France and Portugal too). I won't bother trying to predict how far England will get as I'll just be disappointed.

Anyway, I've noticed a lot of good creative bits coming from the world cup, here's a few I've found over the past few days.

How to make it as an advertising creative

Scamp's book arrived in the post today. After a week or so of waiting I'm pleased to say that I'm not disappointed one bit. I've only got through a quarter so far but already it's full of thing's I've been wanting to find in the same book for ages....I'd highly recommend it to anyone.

It also gives us a bit of confidence with our book and belief that were going in the right direction with it.

Fingers crossed.

New 'gay' McDonalds ad from France

I don't like to make a habit of posting ad's on here but I'll make an exception for this one:

Could it work over here? It is trying to be controversial for the sake of being controversial? It seems like a bit of a weak concept to me.

To draw or not to draw

Sometimes I seem to forget about using a computer to finish off campaigns for our book. This last few days I've been drawing up some ideas and just couldn't seem to get them right. The idea was there but there was something missing. It was only this morning after throwing away the 5000th piece of paper that I thought about using the computer to get them down and guess what...it worked.

I guess what I remembered is that it doesn't matter what format your ideas are presented on, as long as that format works best for the idea. I seem to forget this sometimes.

Next week I might crack out the easel and oil paints...
